This epic historical drama stars Kirk Douglas as Spartacus, the leader of a slave revolt against the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and written by Dalton Trumbo, the film also stars Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, John Gavin, and Tony Curtis.
At the time of the film’s release, Variety stated, “There is solid dramatic substance, purposeful and intriguingly contrasted character portrayals and, let’s come right out with it, sheer pictorial poetry that is sweeping and savage, intimate and lusty, tender and bitter sweet… Spartacus is a rousing testament to the spirit and dignity of man.”
Bottom line: Is this film long? Yes. But is it worth it? Definitely.
